Synopsis Princess and the Pony 2011
Princess and the Pony 2011 (also known as 1st Furry Valentine) is a 2011 drama film by The Asylum. It is The Asylum’s first family film not marketed under their Christian-oriented label Faith Films, deviating from the studio’s use of mature content on their other films.

In order to protect her identity, young Princess Evelyn (Fiona Perry) is sent to live with distant relatives in America. She initially has difficulty adjusting to life in the town until she befriends a pony held captive by a shady carnival owner.

Princess and the Pony 2011 Movie Review
Today I watched the Princess and the Pony (aka 1st Furry Valentine) which is the Asylum’s first foray into children’s films. The premise of the film is that a princess who has been hidden from the world for her whole life due to fears about her safety is nearly kidnapped. To keep her safe, she is sent to live with her aunt in a small town in America where the kidnappers brother, an evil carnival owner (portrayed by Bill Oberst Jr.) and his evil henchman try to find and kidnap her.

This movie review is provided by Snark, Critic & Pop’s special children’s movie correspondent Lily (age 4). And now, the complete and unabridged interview:

Q: How did you like the Princess and the Pony, was it a good movie?
A: Yeah, I liked it really good because there was a pony. I liked the princess and the pony, and the bad guys because they were silly in jail.
Q: What did you think of the princess coming to America to live with her aunt, why did she have to do that?
A: Because there were bad guys
Q: What did the bad guys want to do?
A: They wanted to steal the princess because they could steal all the money and then kill the pony because they wanted to be not nice.
Q: Who were the bad guys?
A: They pretended to work at the carnival and tell people what to do. They liked to be in disguise and they could be in disguise in a store and no one would know. They only liked to be bad and they went to jail.
Q: Was the evil carnival owner nice to the pony?
A: No, he tried to kill it cause then he wouldn’t hear “Naaay” then he went to jail and everyone was happy, the end.
Q: What did you think of the carnival owners mustache?
A: It was like so beautiful and the other guys one was so beautiful.
Q: What did you think of the girl who pretended to be the princess?
A: She wasn’t nice, they took the wrong girl because they thought she was the princess and that wasn’t nice
Q: Would you recommend this movie to other kids?
A: Yeah, cause it has a pony in it and a princess and I like ponies and princesses (At this point Lily ran off to play with her My Little Pony and her Princess Barbie…)

All in all this was a quite entertaining film (as far as kids films go). Jonathan Nation nailed the bumbling small town sheriff and Bill Oberst Jr. was a very entertaining (although at times scary) villain. Fiona Perry did a good job in the role of the princess, and Echo the pony really nailed his role (that thing can jump cups and eat sugar cubes as well as any pony I have ever seen.

The only knock on the film I would have is there was a bit too much realistic violence for a children’s movie. All in all a good pick though, assuming you can find it… Blockbuster carries it, but not at any location near me. It wasn’t in Redbox either. I did find it on Amazon video on demand (as Princess and the Pony) and on Time Warner Cable on demand (as 1st Furry Valentine).
